What is International Women’s Day All About?
As the term suggests, International Women's Day is a globally celebrated occasion held every year on the 8th of March. This day serves as a platform to acknowledge and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women worldwide. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on the strides made in achieving gender equality and to renew our commitment to hastening progress toward gender parity.
When Did International Women’s Day Begin
Back in the late 19th century women lived in a world different from what we know now. They did not have the right to vote, they did not have the right to equal pay, they could not own property and they even had restrictions on their clothing choices which sparked a fight for their rights and freedom.
So in 1908, 15,000 women marched in New York City advocating for shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights. This event paved the way for the first International Women's Day in the United States on February 28th 1909. In 1910 International women's Day was established on March 19th by the Socialist International and was first celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
7 years later the Russian women who worked in textiles initiated a strike for “bread and peace” in response to the deaths of over 2 million Russian soldiers in the First World War which occurred on the 8th of march. This significant event later contributed to the selection of 8th March as Women's Day.
The 2024 International Women’s Day Theme
International Women's Day was celebrated globally for over 60 years before the United Nations adopted it in the 1970s. Every year, the UN designates a theme for International women's day
For 2024, the United Nations came up with 'Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.' It clearly calls for increased investment in women to move gender equity forward.
